What is a Juliet Balcony?

What makes a Juliet balcony?

What separates a Juliet balcony from common spacious balconies is its size and position. Juliet balconies are building extensions that do not feature an outside ‘walk-on’ area and can be made with metal railings, glass, wood, or any other appropriate building material. They are usually installed in front of windows and french doors at a significant height on any property that is large enough for them to fit. They are an incredibly stylish and practical addition to any building, modern examples feature a glass balustrade suspended by a collection of components that complete an eye-catching aesthetic. The name behind Juliet balconies

As you have properly already guessed, their name refers to a popular scene from a renowned Shakespearean play we all know as ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Many of us are more than familiar with Juliet receiving a visitation from her forbidden love Romeo by her balcony and for those of you who know where the story was set, you may get an idea of the location they were inspired from.

Juliet’s balcony

If the secret behind the name has already clued you in, then you will know that the idea of Juliet balconies originated from ‘Italy’, specifically ‘Verona’. In this well-known Italian city, there is a small but finely sculpted balcony that has existed since the 13th century. The home to which it belongs to was originally owned by the ‘Cappello’ family and has built a long-standing reputation as the house of the fabled Juliet. Because of the story’s setting and where its inspiration was drawn from, Juliet balconies were commonly featured throughout most areas of Mediterranean countries and have since grown in popularity.

Safety with a Juliet balcony

Juliet Balconies do not possess a deck or enough space to walk upon as they are designed to protect high-up property openings and offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional balconies. As a word of caution, it would be best not to perch yourself upon a Juliet balcony. Whilst they can be placed in open door areas, they are mostly installed for protection against accidents that could result in falls.
